The 6th meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission on Bilateral Cooperation between the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Government of the Republic of Lithuania

 

On July 10, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius and the Minister of Economy of Azerbaijan Mikayil Jabbarov chaired the sixth meeting of the Lithuania-Azerbaijan Intergovernmental Commission on Bilateral Cooperation held in video-conference format. At the meeting, attended by representatives of relevant state bodies from both sides, co-chair of the Intergovernmental commission, Minister of Economy Mikail Jabbarov spoke about Azerbaijan’s friendly and partnership relations with Lithuania. He emphasized that the political will of the heads of state and the great economic potential of our countries created favorable conditions for the successful development of cooperation. It was noted that the expansion of trade and economic cooperation was widely discussed at a meeting of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda during a video conference held in April this year.

It was noted that the Intergovernmental Commission contributes to the strengthening of bilateral trade and economic relations, supports the implementation of projects in various fields. To date, Azerbaijan and Lithuania have signed about 40 documents about cooperation in various fields, including mutual protection and promotion of investments, elimination of double taxation. Our country is interested in expanding economic ties with Lithuania. In the first five months of this year, trade between the two countries increased by 42 percent compared to the same period of the last year. Mutually beneficial relations were established in the fields of investment, trade, agriculture, energy, information technology, tourism, culture and other fields.

17 companies with Lithuanian capital operate in the field of construction, trade, services, banking and insurance of Azerbaijan. The Minister of Economy emphasized Lithuania’s support in expanding cooperation between Azerbaijan and the European Union, especially within the framework of the Eastern Partnership. He noted that Azerbaijan highly appreciates the technical and advisory support of the Lithuanian structures in the projects and initiatives implemented within the framework of the mobility partnership declaration signed with the European Union in 2013.

Speaking about the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mikail Jabbarov said that these consequences did not bypass the economy of Azerbaijan, and informed about measures of socio-economic support, new mechanisms for developing entrepreneurship, an electronic credit platform, tax incentives and work performed to increase investment attractiveness. He also noted that at the beginning of this year, it was decided to establish a branch the Fourth Industrial Revolution Center of the World Economic Forum in Azerbaijan and that necessary measures would be taken so that other countries could benefit from the activities of the Center.

The Minister of Economy spoke about the favorable business and investment environment in Azerbaijan, emphasized the country's potential in industry, transit and logistics, small and medium-sized businesses, innovation and digitalization, in agriculture, tourism and other fields, as well as opportunities for developing cooperation with Lithuania in these areas.

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius, co-chair of the Intergovernmental commission, emphasized that his country attaches great importance to cooperation with Azerbaijan, noting that this November will mark the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The Lithuanian minister also shared the experience of his country and informed about the measures taken to eliminate the negative consequences of the pandemic.

During the online meeting, the participants discussed the directions for expansion of trade and economic cooperation. The discussions were attended by members of the Intergovernmental Commission on trade, agriculture and food security, energy, transport, innovation and Information Technology, environmental protection, culture. They expressed their opinion on the possibilities for developing cooperation in these areas.

At the end of the meeting, the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Government of the Republic of Lithuania signed a Protocol on the results of the 6th meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission on Bilateral Cooperation. The document was signed by the co-chairs of the intergovernmental commission - Minister of Economy of Azerbaijan Mikail Jabbarov and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevicius. The document envisages the expansion of cooperation in the fields of trade, investment, industry, energy, agriculture, food security, the environment, transport, ICT, innovation, tourism, education and science, culture and other areas.
