UN Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL)

General information about the organization

·         Establishment day: in 1966;

·         Headquartered in Vienna, Austria;

·         Member States: 53 member states and 9 associate members;

·         Purpose: To implement the modernization and harmonization of international trade rules

·         Areas of Activity: coordinate the work of organizations operating in this field and promote cooperation between them, promoting wider participation in existing international conventions, wider adoption of model and uniform laws, preparation or promotion of new international conventions, uniform laws, promote the codification and wider adoption of international trade terms, provisions, customs and practices, if necessary, cooperation with organizations operating in this field, promotion of ways and means of ensuring uniform interpretation and application of international conventions and uniform laws in the field of international trade law, collection and dissemination of information on national legislation and modern legal innovations, including case law in the field of international trade law

·         Member states are elected by the UN General Assembly for a 6-year term, the term of office of half of the members expires every 3 years.

·         Organization's work order organized on 3 levels:

o   The Commission itself, which holds annual plenary sessions at the 1st level;

o   Intergovernmental working groups that prepare topics of the work program of UNCITRAL at the 2nd level;

o   3rd level Secretariat that assists the Commission and working groups.

Information about cooperation between Azerbaijan and the organization

·         Currently, Azerbaijan has an observer status. The observer country participates in the agreement of the text of the documents, however, it cannot object to the adoption of the decision;

·         Participation in the sessions of UNCITRAL’s relevant Working Groups in ensured by the employees of the Ministry of Economy as well as other institutions under the Ministry.
