At the Emerging Markets Forum organized by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in Istanbul, First Deputy Minister of Economy Elnur Aliyev provided information on the measures implemented by Azerbaijan to enhance its trade and transport relations.
The Emerging Markets Forum of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) was held in Istanbul.
At the opening of the event, Turkiye’s Minister of Trade Omer Bolat and OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann delivered speeches. It was noted that the Forum, organized for the first time by the OECD on this topic, aims to strengthen the impact of regional programs and promote cooperation on joint priorities.
First Deputy Minister of Economy Elnur Aliyev spoke at the panel titled “Multilateral Corridors: Enhancing Trade and Transport Connectivity” within the Forum. The panel provided information about Azerbaijan’s efforts to increase the competitiveness and efficiency of regional corridors. It was emphasized that Azerbaijan has prioritized investment in road, rail, port, and air transport infrastructure. Examples include the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway, the Baku International Sea Trade Port, the Alat Free Economic Zone, and new airports built in the liberated territories. The new regions of Fuzuli, Zangilan, and Lachin are being integrated into the country’s logistics map. It was also noted that Azerbaijan is investing in the digitalization of customs and transit operations and applying new technologies in this area.
Azerbaijan is strengthening mutually beneficial partnerships in the fields of transport and trade within international and regional organizations. Efforts in this direction, particularly in cooperation with the Organization of Turkic States (OTS), the United Nations Special Programme for the Economies of Central Asia (SPECA), and regional countries, were emphasized.
The event also provided information on the measures implemented by Azerbaijan to expand investment cooperation with other countries. It was noted that the SPECA Multilateral Trust Fund, the Turkic Investment Fund established within the framework of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS), as well as joint investment funds with Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan, are aimed at supporting cross-border trade, modernizing logistics infrastructure, and financing priority projects.
Panel participants were also informed about the incentives applied for foreign direct investment related to logistics, transportation, and industrial zones.
Within the framework of his participation in the Forum, First Deputy Minister of Economy Elnur Aliyev met with William Tompson, Head of the Eurasia Division of the OECD. During the meeting, issues on the agenda of Azerbaijan’s cooperation with the international organization were discussed.
